What is domain backordering?

Backordering allows you to obtain high-demand domain names that have just expired.

Expired domain names can have existing traffic and higher SEO rankings than new domains, making them a great option for businesses and domain investors alike.

How does it work?

Once a domain name expires, the domain’s owner has a grace period to renew their domain. If the domain owner opts out of renewing, the domain goes into “Pending Delete.”

The amount of time a domain will remain in Pending Delete varies from the registry. At Sav, expired domains remain in pending delete for 10 days after their expiration date.

The second a domain becomes available Sav competes with other registrars to register the domain. Picking a registrar that’s known for drop-catching increases your chances of obtaining the most valuable domains. Sav for instance has 51 registrars, meaning there’s a good chance Sav will be able to acquire your domain.

If Sav secures a domain that multiple people have placed backorders on, the domain will enter a public auction. In the public auction, anyone can bid on the domain. Sav only charges you when you win the domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are domain backorders guaranteed?Icon

Domain backorders are not guaranteed. When you place a backorder for a domain, you’re essentially reserving your interest in it, but the current owner may choose to renew it, or other backorder services might also be vying for the same domain. If the domain does become available and there are multiple backorders, a bidding process may occur. So while backordering increases your chances of acquiring a domain, it doesn't guarantee that you'll get it.

Where can I view my domain backorder?Icon

You can typically view your domain backorder through the registrar or service where you placed the backorder. If you're having trouble finding it, consider checking the help or support sections of the site for specific guidance.

What does my backordered domain come with?Icon

When you place a backorder on a domain, the offerings can vary by registrar or service, but generally, you can expect several key components. First, your backorder ensures that your request to acquire the domain is recorded, allowing you to claim it if it becomes available. You will receive notifications regarding any changes in the domain’s status. If multiple backorders are placed on the same domain, you may have the opportunity to participate in a bidding process. If you successfully acquire the domain, it usually comes with a registration period of about one year, along with access to customer support for any assistance you may need during the process. It's essential to review the specific terms and conditions of the service you’re using, as offerings can differ.

What TLDs are available to backorder?Icon

The availability of TLDs (top-level domains) for backordering can vary depending on the registrar or service you use. Commonly backordered TLDs include popular options like .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .co, and .us. Additionally, some registrars offer backordering for newer or less common TLDs, such as .tech, .store, .online, .app, and .design. However, not all registrars support backordering for every TLD, so it's essential to check with your chosen service to see which specific TLDs they offer for backordering.

What is domain backordering?Icon

Domain backordering is a service that allows you to reserve a domain name that is currently registered by someone else, with the hope of acquiring it if it becomes available. When a registered domain expires and the current owner does not renew it, the domain may enter a grace period before being released back into the pool of available domains. Backordering services monitor these domains and attempt to register them on your behalf as soon as they become available. This process can increase your chances of securing a desired domain, especially if it is highly sought after, but there’s no guarantee that you will successfully acquire it.

How much does domain backordering cost? Icon

The cost of domain backordering can vary widely depending on the registrar or backordering service you choose. Typically, prices range from around $10 to $100 or more. Some services may charge a flat fee for the backorder, while others may have a bidding system if multiple people place backorders for the same domain, which could increase the final cost. Additionally, if you successfully acquire the domain, you may need to pay standard registration fees for the domain, which usually starts at around $10 to $20 per year. It's always a good idea to compare prices and services to find the best option for your needs.

How long after a domain expires can you buy it? Icon

After a domain expires, it typically goes through several stages before becoming available for general registration. First, there's a grace period of about 30 days during which the original owner can renew the domain without penalties; during this time, the domain is not available for backordering. If it isn’t renewed, the domain enters a redemption period, lasting around 30 days, during which the original owner can still reclaim it for a higher fee. Following this, the domain moves into a pending delete status for about 5 days, during which it remains unavailable for registration. Only after this pending delete period does the domain become available for anyone to register. In total, this process can take around 75-80 days after expiration before the domain is accessible to new registrants, depending on the registrar's policies.

What is the difference between a private auction and a public auction? Icon

The main difference between a private auction and a public auction lies in the visibility and accessibility of the bidding process. In a private auction, only a select group of invited bidders can participate, and the details—such as bids and bidder identities—are typically kept confidential. This format is often used for high-value items or domains, allowing bidders to compete without public scrutiny, which can reduce competitive pressure. In contrast, a public auction is open to anyone interested in participating, with bids visible to all and the auction usually advertised widely. This transparency can foster higher competition and potentially result in higher final sale prices, as bidders can see how much others are willing to pay. Ultimately, the choice between a private and public auction depends on the nature of the item being sold and the seller's goals for the sale process.

The domain I purchased through backorder was deleted. Now what? Icon

If the domain you purchased through backorder was deleted, first log into your account with the registrar or backorder service to confirm the domain's status and check for any updates or notifications. Review the backorder terms, as some services may offer a refund or credit if the domain was deleted before you could acquire it. Additionally, monitor the domain for availability, as deleted domains often enter a pending delete phase before becoming available for general registration. If the domain does not become available or if you're unable to acquire it, consider exploring similar domain names or variations that could meet your needs. Lastly, don’t hesitate to contact customer support for assistance and guidance on what steps to take next.
